The Fulton Police Department currently relies on it's veteran drug
dog, Bubba. Bubba,
who has been with the department since 1993, works with Lt. Lyla
Robbins and Lt.
Andre Cook. The department had purchased another dog, Buddy, who joined us in 2002
worked with former Sgt. Kelley Heather.
Buddy passed away in the summer of 2004 from heat exhaustion and
has not been replaced.
Both dogs were purchased and trained at Canine Unlimited in Tulsa,
Oklahoma with Master Trainer Oscar Hall. The police department got
the community involved in both purchases with Operation Drug Dog
and Operation Drug Dog II, which was an opportunity for citizens
to buy shares of “ stock” in the dogs.
Bubba, who is now 17 years old and allegedly “semi-retired,” still
has an active work week. He still does narcotic searches when needed
but his main activity is participating in community events or programs
given at local schools. In the last decade he has been touched or
petted by hundreds of children in the Fulton area. With his gentle
demeanor and soft coat, he is a favorite with children and adults
alike.
Bubba’s work history has been impressive. He has been directly
responsible for numerous arrests relating to the possession of narcotics.
He has responded to assist agencies throughout Mid-Missouri and
has located many kilos of cocaine and several hundred pounds of
marijuana during his tenure.
What makes this more impressive is that this has occurred on local roads
and not interstate highways.
